This Aethernet Journal is a record of the experiences of Ordinal Malaprop in the realm of Second Life as a technologist, natural philosopher, mathematrix and occasional purchaser of shoes.
Ms Malaprop is a resident of the isle of Caledon, where she maintains the original Caledon Lighthouse, though it must be said that other people have now built lighthouses considerably better than hers. Still. Let us not be downhearted.
Ordinal is generally found to be delving into the somewhat esoteric workings of the Second Life universe, at least in terms of scripting objects to make odd noises or explode.
As a reader of this humble journal you will sometimes see reference made to free devices and possibly “the freebie box”. Unless otherwise specified, if Ordinal has finished with a project she will place it into this device (to be found at Ordinal Enterprises at the Lighthouse in Caledon) from where it may be taken and examined by any interested party. Since the issue of most concern to Ordinal is scripting and the examination thereof, these items will be modifiable and, usually, distributed with full permissions, so that one may open them up and see how they work.
If perhaps you have stumbled upon this journal by some accident, and have no knowledge of Second Life, do feel free to join, as it is, indeed, free to enter the world, and as of the time of writing does not require even a credit card number or any such thing. (Though one might find it advisable to spend a small sum in order to obtain a little currency within the world.) You might also find it useful to examine some of the links on the side of the main page, to obtain broader knowledge.
It should of course be noted, particularly by any ladies or gentlemen of the legal profession, that Second Life is a trademark of Linden Labs and not anything to do with the author, and all opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
In case there was any interest in the matter, Ordinal’s skin and hair are by the highly talented Robin Sojourner, and her clothes are mostly from the silentsparrow emporium.
Ordinal maintains Aethernet establishments on both SLExchange and SLBoutique, where one may purchase or obtain for free many of the devices described herein.

I am greatly impressed by your inventions, Miss Malaprop, and wondered if it would be possible to converse with you but am not sure how. I am new here but find I have similar interests to yourself. Keep up the good work.
Yours in admiration,

Ordinal,
I did happen by Caledon and met a refined woman in a yellow dress. I was speaking at the time with a man in a suit [how refreshing] who was looking to get a contract from her on building on his property property. I assume to build.
This was a major relief in pace for me as I had just exited the Violet help area which is “chaos”.
I may return to Caleon soon when I need to “refresh” my soul and return to beauty. It’s orderly and planned!

Dear Ms Ordinal,
I am a documentary filmmaker and I work for a company called Films of Record. We are making a series of short films about Second Life and I would really like to get in touch to find out more about your exploration adventures in SL… I IMed you, but as you say in lots of places, you probably won’t get around to reading it… so I’m trying here - and probably another way too… Taras Balderdash recommended that I get in touch with you…
Hope all is well in Malaprop world,
All the best,
Amy (aka crook snook)
ps, if you’re curious about our company… look at our website - details to the left..

Dear Ordinal,
thank you a lot for your great scripts. I have made an adaptation of the “freebie giver” to give poemes (”textes servis”) in the french library, and have clearly mentionned the credits for the script ;-)
You can see it on our blog.
I would like to give you this object i can not drop the object in your inventory trough your profile :((
I also would like to speak to you about a simple idea that would make possible the access to thousands of texts in SL…but i am not a good scripter enough to do it myself :(
From France,

Hello,
I am most interested by your blog, which I discovered about an hour ago, and read in its entirety. I’m personally only 16, so I’m stuck on TSL (lots and lots of war-related stuff), but I’ve just been working on the “balloon” thing you’ve been talking about. Unfortunately, the new “allow object entry” thing is causing headaches, as it applies all the way up, rather than higher. Anyway, just thought I’d pop by and say thanks for posting all that you’ve posted. It’s all very interesting, and I’ll certainly be remembering it as a place to go to when I hit a snag.
Cheers,
Andrew

Dear Mr. Malaprop,
Nifty blog.
Don’t suppose you’ve come across any kind of crude JSON parser in LSL have you? Even one that just handles flat arrays or maps without nesting would be helpful (-as in: it would save me writing it).
Our service APIs currently use XMLRPC or JSON-RPC and can are called from in-world using llHttpRequest - but I’ve only created a crude XML-RPC response parser in LSL thus far. JSON-RPC is more compact.
Just found your blog via google when looking for one and though you might have a pointer :)
Cheers.
-Cenji.

Ms. And no, not really - LSL can vaguely parse short JSON, but even things such as Twitter responses are a bit long for it, and it is a complete pain to do. I always use a proxy in this sort of situation - see http://ordinalmalaprop.com/twitter/ for an example.
